Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yes, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor commented when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as governor ends in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he noted that any decision is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

Newsom has emerged as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his digital presence and championing a ballot measure that would increase Democratic House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday appearance on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and warned revoking the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160m from California," he said, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office noted that the federal government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under national regulations.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team retorted in a last month's statement responding to Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of a third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor commented while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
