The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
